Beyond the Lights-A Must See

It is not often that you hear the sounds of reggae artist Gyptian in the sound track to a block buster movie.  The producers of the new film Beyond the Lights, connected to the pop culture multicultural movie audience.  Director Gina Prince -Bythewood  who has along list of films to her credits, including the coming of age film “Love and Basketball, has teamed up with her husband Reggie Rock Bythewood to create a memorable love story that connects with all ages.

Caribbean American Influence

Reggie Rock Bythewood, who’s Caribbean roots started back in  Bronx New York,  has also written and directed “Biker Boyz,” the documentary, “Daddy’s Girl,” the ESPN 30-for-30 documentary, “One Night In Vegas” and “Gun Hill,” the two hour pilot for BET. He also did the rewrites for the Fox Searchlight film, “Notorious” and was awarded written by credit along with the film’s initial writer, Cheo Hodari Coker.

The film is a love story between two characters, ‘Noni Jean’ and Officer ‘Kaz Nicols’ who saves Noni from committing suicide . Noni Jean, a new piping-hot singer who has reached stardom fast and furiously can’t seem to handle the pressures of what the life of a pop star entails.  Her overbearing “momager” mother, played by Minnie Driver,  is the catalyst for Noni trying to take her life.  Kaz has political aspirations, however, his father played by Danny Glover, doesn’t approve of his relationship with Noni because “she’s not first lady material”.

Beyond the lights sheds light on the price of fame, and how easy it is to become unhappy, when you may seem to have it all. It is a MUST SEE! There’s a lot to learn from this film, especially for the young generation, seeking success through fame.  This film will become a cult classic much like Love and Basketball, and will be a significant career achievement for actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw.
