Atlanta Jamaican Independence Ball

The 2014 Atlanta Jamaican Association Independence Ball took place on Saturday August 16, 2014, at the Atlanta Airport Marriott Gateway. The event celebrated the 52 Anniversary of Jamaica’s Independence, and AJA’s scholarship program. The celebration was attended by many Caribbean-American professionals. This year’s keynote speaker was Mr. Richard Byles, Co-Chairman, Economic Programme Oversight Committee (EPOC), who shared a detailed progress report on Jamaica’s changing economy.

AJA’s red carpet was hosted by radio personality Ms.Pat Backus, with Future Movement Radio. The evening included several community developments including  an official announcement of the newly formed Jamaican Chamber of Commerce of Atlanta, which is scheduled to officially launch in 2015. The official announcement was made by Chairman Dr. David Panton, and President Dr. Janice Barrow.

A special presentation to Mrs. Hazel Martin; widow of the late Honorary Consul General Mr. Vin Martin, brought attendees to their feet, in honor of her presence.  AJA President Mr. Alan Stewart announced an inaugural award named after his late mentor Mr. Vin Martin, which was presented to their first recipient, by Mrs. Hazel Martin. A number of dignitaries were in attendance, including the newly appointed Atlanta Airport General Manager, Mr. Miguel Southwell, M1 Racer -Jason Bedasse and wife, Attorney Nicole Birch, Attorney Jewel Scott and husband, and many other notables.

Music was provided Mr. Andrew Lawrence and Caribbean Music Farm.
